Orthodontic Emergencies

While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, it’s important to know what to do if you experience discomfort or a problem with your braces or aligners. Most issues can be managed at home until your next appointment, but if you’re ever unsure, our team is only a phone call away.

Orthodontic Emergencies

What is considered an orthodontic emergency?

A true orthodontic emergency is uncommon, but contact us immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe pain or discomfort that does not improve with over-the-counter pain relief
  • A broken appliance can cause injury to your cheeks, lips, or gums
  • Trauma or injury to your mouth
  • Swelling, infection, or bleeding around your braces or gums

If you experience facial swelling or trauma outside of business hours, go directly to your local emergency department or call your dentist.

Common orthodontic problems and what to do

Many orthodontic issues can be handled temporarily at home until we can see you in the clinic.

Here are some quick tips:

Loose bracket or band

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. If it detaches completely, keep it safe and bring it with you to your next appointment.

Poking or broken wire

If a wire is poking your cheek or gums, try gently pushing it back into place with a clean cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. If that’s not possible, cover the end with orthodontic wax. Do not cut the wire yourself, just call us for advice.

Lost or broken elastic ties

If a small elastic tie falls off, it’s not an emergency. We’ll replace it at your next visit.
